The X-rays below show a palate with an expander in place while the palatal suture opens during the rapid maxillary expansion phase. When the suture opens normally, a diastema (space) will appear between the upper central incisors. The red arrows indicate the opening zone of the palatal suture. The immobilization period ( 3 months) after the activation of the screw a...llows this area to undergo recalcification and form bone in the opening zone of the suture. It is possible to radiologically confirm that a maxillary suture is opening properly as shown on the examples below. Having to take such radiographs is however uncommon.
