Teeth are living structures They need nutrients like any other tissue in the body in order to maintain the strength and integrity of their enamel. In order to s...upply teeth nutrients, the body has an inner transport system. It is called the dentinal fluid transport. It’s not well known that dentinal fluid transport ( DFT ) plays an even more crucial role in tooth decay than we give credit for. Drs. Ralph Steinman and John Leonora have published papers on this phenomena. They published over 100 of articles that provide the basis for DFT theory in which dental caries resistance is ultimately mediated by nutrients and hormones. In their studies rats were injected with radioactive tracer. In well fed healthy rats Steinman was able to trace the radioactive substance from - the injection site - into the blood stream - into the pulp canal of the tooth - through the dentinal tubules - into enamel rods - clear out of the mouth This process after injection would take roughly an hour. In the experiment group, a ‘decay producing diet’ was used. The diet would ‘reverse’ the fluid flow. Fluids flowed from the: - Surface of the tooth - Through the enamel (bringing bacteria with it) - Through dentine - Into the pulp chamber In these rats, tooth decay would be observed. The flow could be turned one way or the other just by altering the diet. Results were the same either way. What they ingested controlled the amount of decay they generated. Steinman and Dr. Leonara an endocrinologist were the first isolate ‘parotid hormone’ that is released from the main saliva gland. When parotid hormone is produced the fluid flow ran from the pulp chamber bringing nutrients into all parts of the tooth. The body can replenish teeth and has an active system to do so via the blood-tooth connection and the brain-tooth connection. Ultimately diet directs in what direction nutrients flow either inside out or outside in. Ultimately the brain is calculating nutrient levels in the body and will tell the body how to absorb its surroundings. What a fascinating system....
